DUMPLINGS HOUSE

Set on a high outcropping of bedrock and looking out at Newport Harbor and Clingstone, our clients’ site was incredibly challenging, but had amazing potential. The owners had 3 teenage daughters and a large extended family and they hoped to host their family and friends as much as possible. The site is divided vertically with the drive court and the entry on the downhill side of the house. The glass entry stair hall not only connects the approach with the elevated rear garden and pool area, but also connects the two gables. The view unfolds as one ascends the interior stair or the stone steps along the south side under the trellis roof.

The gables are two simple forms, which serve as the datum for the articulated spaces such as the all glass living room, a home office and the entry sequence. These spaces are clad with dark stained Accoya rain screen detailing and extensive glazing. The screen porch is spun off to the edge of the deck and anchors the northeast promontory. The two shingled gables contain the Owners’ and guest bedrooms on the south side and the girls’ rooms and all the public/family space in the north gable.

Layers of decks and flagstone connect the built elements as they descend toward the water. The upper deck includes a sheltered sitting area with an outdoor fireplace and a nearby grill/bar zone. The southern sitting area, paved with granite lintels, is tucked into the garden for extra protection. Steps lead to a cantilevered deck with a swimming pool and screen porch overlooking the cliff. Every feature centers attention on the harbor and its view.
